Eye Cataract Surgery

The main treatment for an eye cataract is surgery. There are two main types that can cure this condition, and both are known for being quite effective to eliminate this issue. Both kinds simply remove the lens of the eye, which is cloudy due to cataracts, and replace it with an artificial lens. This can allow you to see clearly once again. Before you get surgery to remove the lens due to an eye cataract, you should learn the basic facts about each type.

Types of Surgery

One type of surgery that can get rid of an eye cataract is called phacoemulsification, also known as phaco for short. In this popular type of surgery, the doctor makes a small cut on the side of the cornea, which covers the eye. A probe is then placed through the incision, using ultrasound waves to break up the lens. This action makes it easier for it to be removed through suction.

The other kind of eye cataract treatment is called extracapsular surgery, which requires the doctor to make a long cut on the side of the cornea. In this kind of surgery, the lens is not broken up into pieces, but the cloudy part is removed all at one time instead. The rest of the lens is then suctioned out.

Artificial Lens

Once the lens is removed through either type of eye cataract surgery, it is replaced by an artificial lens. This is referred to as an intraocular lens, or IOL. It is simple, clear, and plastic, and is very low maintenance since it does not need any extra care. You will notice a difference in vision right away, since it will be clear instead of cloudy, but you should not feel the artificial lens at all. In fact, eye cataract surgery is typically very successful, so talk to your doctor if you think it will help you.
