Surgical Treatment for Cataracts

If you are affected by cataracts in the eye and want to get treatment, you should find out the basic facts first. Surgery is usually considered the most common and successful treatment for cataracts, so you will likely undergo cataract surgery at some point if you want to finally be rid of the issue. Find out more about this choice before you opt for it.

The Basics

The main point of this type of treatment for cataracts is to remove the entire lens and replace it with an artificial one. The new lens should feel about the same as the original one, which is partly why it is so common to get this surgery. The artificial lens requires no extra maintenance, much to the relief of most patients.

What to Consider

Before you get surgery for this eye condition, you should know a few facts about it. First of all, there is no perfect timeframe for this surgery, as you can get it as soon or as late as you want while still getting results. Therefore, there should be no pressure to get this kind of treatment for cataracts immediately, meaning that you will have as much time as you need to think it over.

The bad news is that not everyone is eligible for surgery that involves a replacement lens, as certain additional eye problems could make it too dangerous. However, such patients can still usually have the cataract removed, and then be given glasses or contacts in order to see clearly again.

If you do choose to get this treatment for cataracts, and are in fact eligible, you should know that only one eye will be treated at a time. Therefore, if you have cataracts in both eyes, expect to wait one to two months for the other eye to be treated. Your eye doctor should let you know these facts before your treatment for cataracts begins, but it is also helpful to have an idea of what to expect long before you opt for surgery.
